Definition
Almost all men at some point in their lives will have some sort of erection difficulties. If, however, you have more than the occasional difficulty with getting and keeping a quality erection, or your erections are not as hard as they used to be, or if you cannot gain an erection at all, you may well be suffering from erectile dysfunction , and you are certainly not alone.
It affects about 50 percent of Australian men between the ages of 40 and 70 years old. You shouldn’t be embarrassed about ED, it is a recognized medical condition, and in the overwhelming majority of cases, ED is treatable.
Causes
An erection is a perfectly balanced process that involves the brain, blood vessels, nerves and hormones. If one of these elements is not functioning, ED may well be the result.
Existing health conditions causing erectile dysfunction.
Getting an erection is dependent on the smooth flow of blood to the penis, therefore health issues that affect blood flow, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes, may also affect erection quality.
a) High cholesterol is a common cause of erectile dysfunction
The risk of ED is greater in men with high total cholesterol levels than in men with low total cholesterol levels. If there is too much cholesterol in your system, blood flow into the penis may simply be blocked since cholesterol sticks to the walls of the arteries, leading to less blood flow into the penis, causing erectile difficulties.
b) High blood pressure can cause erectile dysfunction
Since high blood pressure, or hypertension, is a condition that interferes with blood flow, it is frequently associated with ED. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder, which puts strain on the blood vessels. This may cause the blood vessels to harden and narrow, which may prevent blood from getting to the penis. Blood flow is critical for healthy erectile functioning.
c) Diabetes can cause erectile dysfunction
Like high cholesterol and high blood pressure, diabetes can contribute to erection difficulties because it impacts on blood flow, which is critical for healthy erectile functioning. Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. Over time, sugar levels can damage the nerves and the blood vessels that produce erections. When this happens, diabetes can often lead to ED.
d) Lifestyle Factors as a cause of erectile dysfunction
Lifestyle factors are also a consideration. Cigarette smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, and obesity can all impede your natural bodily functions, which can mean difficulty in getting and maintaining an erection. The good news is that these are all factors that are in your control.
Smoking can also cause damage to blood vessels, which may prevent blood flow to the penis. For men with other ED risk factors, smoking can double their chances of having ED.
e) Other causes of erectile dysfunction
Psychological conditions such as anxiety, depression, or stress can depress your brain's normal response to sexual stimuli and impede your ability to get an erection.
Kidney disease, liver disease, or hormonal disorders can throw off the delicate balance of the body’s processes, making it difficult for the normal erection process to occur.
Prescription and over-the-counter medicines such as high blood pressure medications, antidepressants and others are all drugs that may play a role in ED.
The prostate is a small gland near your bladder, which is next to the nerves that are needed for erections. This is why certain treatments for prostate problems can lead to ED.
Nerve trauma resulting from spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke or surgery can interrupt the connection between the nervous system and the penis. For men with spinal injuries, ED is the most common sexual problem.
